Robertson was a full-time writer in the 1990s. He was Hugh MacDiarmid’s first resident writer from 1993 to 1995. Robertson was already heavily influenced before this appointment by MacDiarmid’s Scots poetry and MacDiarmid. His first novel and his short stories used Edinburgh’s historical and contemporary life as a central theme. He drew on his experiences of living in Edinburgh during his PhD, the late 1990s, and then moving to Fife and later Angus. His experiences in Edinburgh influenced each of his novels to some degree. Joseph Knight is based upon the true story about a slave who was brought from the Caribbean to Scotland. The novel centers mainly around Dundee and Edinburgh. The Testament of Gideon Mack is set in a fictional rural village, which is similar to the ones found between Dundee, Aberdeen, and eastern Scotland. The novels feature both the rural and urban landscapes of Scotland, as well as the history of the country between the 17th century and the 20th.
Robertson’s first two novels were set in Scotland. (The Fanatic combined a story about contemporary Scotland with one of Scotland in 17th-century Scotland, while Joseph Knight was historical). However, he is not a historian novelist. Gideon Mack was set between 1950s and today.
Politically, Robertson was involved in the political magazine Radical Scotland in the 1980s. He was awarded an honorary degree by The Open University at the degree ceremony in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh on 21 June 2014.
