In March 2020 Penchev announces he’s donating 222,000 leva to Alexandrovska University Hospital for the buying of ventilators because of thenew coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Penchev sets the condition that people working for his company Walltopia would use the ventilators with priority. He says firmly that if a sick person is currently using one of the machines, but one of his workers is also in need of mechanical ventilation, then the aforementioned sick person must be removed. Hospital staff declare that only doctors will decide who will use the ventilators. Later Alexandrovska hospital declines the donation, as its director declares that such a donation would break the medics’ Hippocratic Oath and that the hospital accepts only unconditional donations. Penchev justifies his own actions and declares that he will offer other hospitals the machines under the same conditions.
