Ieva Ilves Biography

Ieva Ilves is one of the most popular and richest Civil Servant who was born on September 13, 1977 in Riga, Latvia. Ieva the Ilves (nee Kupce; born September 13th 1977) is the former First Lady of Estonia as well as a diplomat and cyber security expert. Ilves has announced her candidacy as an Latvian candidate in this year’s European Parliament election. She is third Candidate on the list for Development/For!, second on the list is Baiba Rubesa, the former chief executive officer at Rail Baltica.

From 2007 until 2010 Ilves was assigned in the Latvian Delegation to NATO and from 2010 until 2011, she was assigned by The European Union as a Political Advisor to the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus in Baku, Azerbaijan which focused on human rights and other subjects. Ilves was also an advisor for the State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense having responsibility to create the STRATCOM COE of NATO in Riga and to coordinate the the national cyber security policy as well as during Latvia’s presidency in the EU.

She studied at the University of Latvia and received a master’s degree in Political Science. In 2012 Ilves attended Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC.

In 2016 she married the then president of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves and undertook the responsibilities of the First Lady of Estonia. As the First Lady of Estonia she has accompanied her spouse in numerous foreign visits including the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly where she met with the former president of U.S Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

There are three kids: Ralfs (b. 2002) and Isabella (b. 2014.) as well as Hans Hendrik Ilves (b. 2016).

In the 1990s, Ilves was an integral part of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia team which worked towards Latvia’s ambition to be a member of NATO. After the successful accession, she continued to activities in the realm of security policy and democratic institutions sharing the lessons and experiences of Latvia from the past together with the country’s Eastern neighbors including Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia. In 2005 and 2006, Ilves was a member of with the Riga NATO Summit Task Force as the head of both the regional and NATO Public Diplomacy efforts for the NATO Summit 2006 in Riga. In 2000, she was the first founding member of the Latvian Transatlantic Organization. She is also Chairperson and Founding Member of the “Open Belarus” Board of non-governmental organization in Latvia which was established in 2004. Open Belarus has expanded Latvia’s policies and efforts to promote the promotion of democratic development in Belarus. In 2008, she was a founding member in the non-governmental regional organization “Baltic to Black Sea Alliance”.

In 2012 Ilves and the former US ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker, co-edited the book: “Nordic-Baltic-American Cooperation: Shaping the U.S.-European Agenda”.
