After six years away from the professional circuit Preece was able to make it to the final sixteen at Q-School Event One in 2016 in which he lost 4-2 against Chen Zhe, and the same event in Event Two, where he lost 4-1 to John Astley. But these performances were enough to earn him third on the Q-School’s Order of Merit and earned him an opportunity to play for two years in Main Tour.
Preece took three wins in the 2016 Shanghai Masters qualifying, but was not allowed to travel in China because of David Gilbert losing out 5-2.

Preece first made an appearance at the top of the tour in following a highly successful track record as a young. He was one of the youngest winners at the World Amateur Championship between 1999 in which he defeated David Lilley 11-8 in the final, and 2011 in which Hossein Vafaei won the title at the age of 17 and just 81 days.
His best performances up to 2009 included the last 48 tournaments and he was able to do this during 2007’s 2007 Welsh Open, 2007 China Open, 2007 UK Championship and the 2008 Shanghai Masters. He made it to the final 32 in a tournament for the very first time in the 2009 Welsh Open with victories over Peter Lines, Andrew Higginson and Stuart Bingham but was beaten by a score of 0-5 Stephen Maguire. The remainder of 2008/09 was disappointing and put him at risk of being cut off from the main tour. However the tournament was awarded him the wildcard for World Snooker which enabled him to play on the tour during this 2009-10 season. But, he was not able to keep his spot, and has since been dropped from on the tour’s main stage.
