Ian John McParland (born 4 October 1961) is a Scottish former professional footballer and manager. He was a professional striker for a variety of teams, but is best well-known for his eight-year stint at Notts County, a club that he later helmed. He’s now an expert on the every week’s football talk show, ‘Team Talk which airs that airs on Notts TV.

He was brought in to Ipswich as a member coach Roy Keane’s team on November 27, 2009. On January 7, 2011, the club was appointed the interim manager of Keane as well as the first time he played, he was defeated 7-0 by Premier League side Chelsea. The final and second game as manager was at home in the League Cup semi-final against Arsenal on January 12, 2011 in that Ipswich defeated Arsenal by 1-0. The club was officially replaced with Paul Jewell on 13 January 2011.

McParland joined Swindon Town on 3 March 2011 as assistant to Paul Hart who had taken over the manager’s role. He left the club in April 2011 following relegation to League Two.

On 28 February 2013, McParland was appointed the under-21 coach at former club Nottingham Forest, returning to the club after an absence of over five years.

McParland later joined Nottingham Forest as a coach. He worked for Nottingham Forest for more than ten years, and was also the reserves team’s head coach the majority of the time. After Gary Megson left the club in February of 2006 He was placed on the spot temporarily along with Frank Barlow in a joint first team management position.

McParland was born at Tranent, East Lothian and after completing the apprenticeship at Sunderland because of homesickness, he worked over two years with the Lothian coal mining industry, while being a player in the club of Ormiston Primrose. McParland was playing for Notts County from 1980 to 1988. After that, he played playing for Hull City, Walsall, Dunfermline Athletic, Lincoln City, Northampton Town, Instant-Dict (Hong Kong), Eastern AA (Hong Kong), Hamilton Academical and Berwick Rangers.

Barlow along with Barlow was named the Manager of the Month in March 2006, as they were unbeaten for 10 games, winning six consecutive times which included a 7-1 victory against Swindon Town at the City Ground. McParland has missed out on setting a record for the club with seven consecutive wins, when Forest lost 3-1 defeat in the face of Hartlepool United. Despite Forest being a narrow miss in winning the League One playoffs, McParland was still the favorite to be offered the Forest job (with Barlow) on a permanent basis. Following Colin Calderwood was named the permanent successor to Megson, McParland and Barlow were appointed coaches for Forest’s Forest First Team.

He was announced as the new Notts County manager in October 2007. McParland enjoyed a two-year spell in charge and, despite the appointment of Sven-Göran Eriksson as Director of Football, the club decided to retain his services. McParland was sacked on 12 October 2009, however, with the club in fifth place in League Two.
