Ian McKeever (13 February 1970 – 2 January Ian McKeever (13 February 1970 – 2 January 2013) was an Irish mountaineer, broadcaster also a motivational speaker. He was once the record in the world for the fastest complete the Seven Summits challenge, completing the Messner and Bass lists in record time of 156 days. He was killed when lightning strikes at Mount Kilimanjaro.

When McKeever reached 40 when he was 40, in 2009, the man decided to take on the task to beat Eamonn Coghlan’s record of four minutes for people older than 40. His time dropped by 7 mins to just 4 minutes and 20 seconds after 22 months of hard work. McKeever established a new record for the highest number of ascents on Croagh Patrick, in 2011 when he climbed 35 summits in just 80 climbing hours.

In 2004 McKeever recorded records in 2004. He set the Five Peaks Challenge world record by climbing and descending the five peaks in just 16 hours and 16 minutes. McKeever climbed all 26 peaks of Ireland’s Island of Ireland in an average of 98 hours in.

McKeever broke the record of the world to complete his participation in the Seven Summits Challenge in 2007 by climbing the highest peak on all seven continents in 155 days. That’s 32 lower than his previous best. The year before, McKeever was able to help his godson of 10 years Sean McSharry become the youngest person in Europe to climb the summit of Kilimanjaro. McKeever made up a team who tried to row through the South Atlantic Ocean in under 30 days in 2009. The crew comprised Leven Brown Livar Nysted as well as Breffny Morgan. After 11 days of sea, and a distance of 1003 miles the vessel lost its rudder. They were forced to put off the trip.

On 2 January 2013 McKeever was struck by lightning and died while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. He was on the third day of the climb and had experienced torrential rain for the duration. The group was due to pass the mountain’s famous Lava Tower on that day. During the lightning strike his fiancée was injured, although not seriously.
