Crook started his football career with Tottenham Hotspur in 1976 as a schoolboy. Crook made his debut against Liverpool in 1980 and remained with the club for six more years. It was difficult for him to get into the first team as the Tottenham midfield of the time included Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles and Ossie Ardes. As a substitute, he would receive a UEFA Cup Medal 1984, which was used to replace him in the final in which Tottenham beat R.S.C. Anderlecht on penalties.
Crook arrived in Norwich City in 1986 for a cost of PS80,000. This would be one of the most affordable club buys. Crook was the heart of Norwich’s most successful team. He helped the club to three top-five finishes in England’s top league. He also played in the club’s UEFA Cup run from 1993-1994. However, he was suspended after receiving two yellow cards. His passing skills and ability to score from set-pieces were a hallmark of his midfield play. Experts in the game believe Crook would have been able to play for the entire England team if he had played for a larger club. Crook, his former Norwich team-mate Steve Bruce, was voted the best player to never have played for England in a Four Four Two magazine poll.
