Chipchase’s career reached its peak in 1974. He was selected to represent England in the 1974 British Commonwealth Games. He defeated Howard Payne, Peter Farmer and won the gold medal. He beat the previous games record three times during the competition and ended with a personal best of 69.56m (228 ft2 /2 in). He set a personal record of 71.00m (232 feet 11/4 inches) in Edinburgh that August.
