He set a personal record of 71.00m (232 feet 11/4 inches) in Edinburgh that August. This mark placed him third in Britain’s top throwers, after Paul Dickenson, Barry Williams and Chris Black. In a field that was dominated by Soviet and German athletes, he finished tenth at the 1974 European Athletics Championships.
After 1974, he only made one international appearance – a sixth place finish at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. He was competitive in domestic athletics until the 1980s. His achievements include two titles at Inter-Counties Championships (1978 and 1980) as well as a third-place finish at the 1981 UK Athletics Championships.

Chipchase was born at Hebburn, north England. In 1969, he rose to national prominence as a junior when he won the English Schools Championships AAA Junior Championships, and the British Schools International Match. All of these titles he retained the following year. He made his international championship debut at the 1970 European Athletics Junior Championships. He placed eighth with a score of 57.76m (189 ft 6in).
In 1970, he won his first senior hammer throwing title at the North of England Athletics Championships. This was while he was still a teenager. He would win that title six more times in his career. In 1971, he set the British junior record at 64.14m (210 feet 5 in). This record stood for eight years before it was broken by Martin Girvan. While he was in higher education, he continued to compete and was a three time consecutive champion at Universities Athletic Union Championships 1971-1973. He finished third at the 1973 AAA Championships behind Barry Williams and Howard Payne, Britain’s most powerful throwers and 1972 Olympians.
He also represented England at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and Great Britain at the 1974 European Athletics Championships.
