Ian Brightwell Biography
Birthday | Apr 9 |
Birth Year | 1968 |
Ian Brightwell is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on April 9, 1968 in Lutterworth, England, United Kingdom. Ian Robert Brightwell, an English ex-professional footballer and former manager, was born 9 April 1968. He was a defender in the Football League from 1986 to 2006. He played 468 league games over a 20-year playing career.
The 1996-97 season was turbulent. Ball was replaced by Steve Coppell, and Clark was then replaced by Frank Clark. Brightwell, however, remained a consistent first team presence, making 39 appearances. He was unable to stop City being relegated to the third tier for only 25 games in 1997-1998. After making 382 league and cup appearances and scoring 19 goals in 18 years of association with Maine Road, he was awarded a testimonial match as well as a free transfer.
Despite Walsall’s relegation, he had impressed manager Ray Graydon during his time at the Bescot Stadium, and joined the club permanently in summer 2000. He played 54 games in the 2000–01 campaign, helping the club to qualify for the Second Division play-offs with a fourth-place finish. He played the full 120 minutes of the play-off final at the Millennium Stadium, as Walsall beat Reading 3–2 after extra-time, having to come from behind twice in the game.
In August 2002 he moved on to local rivals Port Vale, who were back in the Second Division under the management of his former boss at Manchester City, Brian Horton. He played 38 games for the “Valiants” in 2002–03, before he was appointed as a coach at Vale Park in June 2003. He featured three times for the Vale first team in 2003–04, before he left the club in May 2004. He also served the club as caretaker-manager for less than 24 hours between Brian Horton’s resignation and Martin Foyle’s appointment in February 2004.
Peter Reid helped City climb the table from 1990-91 to fifth place. However, they were still 21 points behind champions Arsenal. City finished fifth in 1991-92 with 12 points less than champions Leeds United. In 1992-93, they finished ninth, in the first season of Premier League football. The club finished in disappointing 16th and 17th places in 1993-94, 1994-95, respectively. Brightwell was not included in the first team, however, after he ruptured his patella tendon and was forced to withdraw from the sport for over a year. He eventually recovered and was able to return to City under Alan Ball for the 1995-96 campaign. However, the Sky Blues were relegated to 18th place due to their inferior goal differential.

He was therefore in the first team picture as City were being relegated from the First Division in 1986-1987 under McNeill and Jimmy Frizzell. Brightwell was a versatile player, who could play at any position on the field. However, he was more often used as a right- back than as a midfielder. City finished ninth in Second Division in 1987-1988. They were promoted to the Second Division in 1988-1989 by Mel Machin. They finished second behind champions Chelsea (17 points) and Crystal Palace (3 points). Brightwell was also captained four times by the England under-21s. He scored twice in 1989 and 1988. Although he did not score many goals on the field, he did manage to hit the top corner from 25 yards on 3 February 1990, earning City a draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The 1989-1990 season ended in 14th place, just behind United on goal difference.
After winning the FA Youth Cup in 1986 with Manchester City, he began his professional career. He remained at Maine Road for 12 years and helped City win promotion to the Second Division in 1988-1989. In 1998, he joined Coventry City. Two years later, he moved to Walsall. After helping the “Saddlers”, win the Second Division playoffs in 2001 and then joining Stoke City in March 2002, he was a key player in the success of the “Saddlers”. He moved to Port Vale after playing for the Potters in their 2002 Second Division play-off victory. In June 2003, he was appointed coach at Vale Park. A year later, he joined Macclesfield Town to be a player-coach. In October 2006, he was appointed as a caretaker-manager at the club. He was then promoted to permanent manager in June 2007. After a disappointing start to the 2007/08 season, he left Moss Rose in Feb 2008.
Brightwell joined Premier League side Coventry City for the 1998–99 season, but was given just one League Cup game by manager Gordon Strachan. He left Highfield Road at the end of the 1999–2000 season without having featured for the “Sky Blues” in the league. He was loaned out to First Division side Walsall at the end of the 1999–2000 campaign, playing ten games, but could not prevent the “Saddlers” from suffering relegation.
