Bousfield, who is also a pedagogue and an instructor at the Hochschule der Kunste, Bern, Switzerland, teaches music.
Bousfield, then 24 years old, was appointed principal trombonist for the London Symphony Orchestra in 1988. He succeeded Denis Wick. Denis Wick stated that Bousfield was an exceptionally accomplished player, and that he has the experience to make up for it.
Bousfield’s orchestral recordings are numerous, but the highlights include the “Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace” recording with the LSO (BMG, 1997), the tenor horn solo in Mahler’s 7th Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas and the LSO (Sony, 1999), the large trombone solo in Mahler’s 3rd Symphony with Pierre Boulez and the VPO (DG, 2003), and with the same forces, the live Mahler 2nd symphony, particularly the final movement.
In 1999 he won an audition for the principal trombone position with the Vienna State Opera/Vienna Philharmonic, where he performed until leaving in 2012 to devote more time to his teaching and solo careers.
Bousfield performed Elgar-Howarth’s trombone concerto in 1984 with the Yorkshire Imperial Band, broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He also performed the first British performance, Eine kleine Posaunenmusik by Gunther Schuller, in 1985 with the Halle Orchestra under the direction of the composer.

Bousfield was the youngest ever winner of the Shell/London Symphony Orchestra Music Scholarship in 1979.
Bousfield joined in 1980 the European Union Youth Orchestra, where he was trained under Claudio Abbado for two years. After six months of study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Bousfield was promoted to Principal Trombone of the Halle Orchestra in March 1983.
