Ian Robert Bennyworth, an English ex-professional footballer, was born 15 January 1962. He made 173 appearances for the Football League. He was a central defender and played league football for Hull City Scarborough United, Hartlepool United, and Scarborough. He played non-league football at Gainsborough Trinity, Nuneaton Borough, and Boston United. He was also a Scarborough player who won the 1986-87 Football Conference and was the first club to be automatically promoted to the Football League.

Bennyworth was a key player in helping the club reach the League play-off semi-finals and eliminated Second Division Portsmouth from their League Cup. Scarborough and Bennyworth went on to win the next season in what was called “one of the most humiliating Cup losses in [Chelsea] history”. Scarborough was two goals behind Chelsea on that night, 3-1 aggregate. Chelsea were in second place in First Division with 24 minutes remaining in the League Cup Round 2. They were leveled with goals by Tommy Graham and Paul Robinson. Martin Russell then converted a penalty to complete their victory.

Bennyworth was born at Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. As a teenager, he began working at a local travel agency. Bennyworth started his football career with Hull City as an apprentice. As a 17-year old, Bennyworth made his debut in the 1979-80 season’s final match. He lost 1-0 to Bury in Third Division. However, he was substituted in Anglo- Scottish Cup matches at the start of the next season. These were his only competitive appearances. After playing in the Northern Premier League at Gainsborough Trinity, he moved up to Nuneaton Borough, which was then the Alliance Premier League. After making 57 appearances for Nuneaton at that level, he signed for Scarborough, their divisional rivals, for a cost of PS1,500 in September 1986. Bennyworth paid the fee in installments because the club didn’t have the funds to pay.

After making 129 appearances in League or Conference for Scarborough in League, Bennyworth and Paul Olsson were signed by Hartlepool United for PS15,000 each in December 1989. Bennyworth made his debut against his former employers in a 4-1 win. He was a regular player in the starting eleven the next two seasons, and he helped Hartlepool to promotion to the Third Division. This was only the second promotion for Hartlepool in its 70-year Football League history. His last Hartlepool appearance was in November 1991. He then returned to Gainsborough for another spell and later joined Boston United.

Playing alongside Steve Richards and Paul Kendall, Bennyworth was a regular in Scarborough’s defence as they won the division, six points clear of favourites Barnet, to become the first team to benefit from the introduction of direct promotion and relegation between Conference and League in place of the longstanding re-election system. His second appearance in the Football League was Scarborough’s first: a 2–2 draw at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers marred by £20,000-worth of damage to the ground, fighting on the terraces, 54 arrests, and a visiting supporter falling through the roof of a stand. The Guardian’s correspondent thought him “outstanding” as Scarborough won at Scunthorpe United in November.
