Huw Watkins, born 13 July 1976, is a British composer/pianist. He was born in South Wales and studied composition and piano at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester. There he also received piano lessons by Peter Lawson. After completing his Music degree at King’s College in Cambridge, he completed a MMus (Composition) at the Royal College of Music. He also studied composition with Robin Holloway, Alexander Goehr and Julian Anderson. Huw Watkins received the Constant and Kit Lambert Junior Fellowship from the Royal College of Music. He is currently a composer teacher. He is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at The Royal Academy of Music.

Recent works include a London Concerto, which was commissioned by London Symphony Orchestra in 2005 to commemorate their centenary; Rondo for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, a Nash Ensemble Commission celebrating their 40th anniversary, and a Double Concerto (viola, cello, orchestra) that was premiered at 2005 BBC Proms. On the Britten Sinfonia’s own label, the album Songs of the Sky features his composition Dream. Ty Cerdd commissioned “On the Other Hand – Concerto For Brass Band and 2 Jazz Trumpets” for the National Youth Brass band of Wales. It was premiered in 2014.

Watkins’ Violin Concerto was premiered at The Proms on 17 August 2010, performed by Alina Ibragimova, for whom it was written.

As a pianist, Huw Watkins is regularly heard on BBC Radio three, both as a soloist and with artists such as Alina Ibragimova, Daniel Hope, Nicholas Daniel and Alexandra Wood. He has given premieres of works by Alexander Goehr, Peter Maxwell Davies and Mark-Anthony Turnage. He has performed concertos with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra of the Swan as well as being the Britten Sinfonia’s pianist. He has recorded Thomas Adès’ song cycle The Lover in Winter with the countertenor Robin Blaze for EMI Classics, and his recording of contemporary British music for violin and piano with Alexandra Wood was released on Usk in 2005. His most recent recording was of the piano cycle Symmetry Disorders Reach by Alexander Goehr, for Wergo.

A Nocturne for solo horn or chamber orchestra – recorded first by David Jolley, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra under Mischa Santanora in March 2002; a Cello Sonata recorded with Paul Watkins for Nimbus Records; String Quartet No. 3 was written for the Belcea Quartet, and premiered in London’s Wigmore hall in 2004.
