He is an Iranian scholar and reformist cleric. He is the grandson of Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (the son of Ruhollah’s first son, Mostafa Khomeini) and Masoumeh Yazdi, the daughter of Morteza Hayeri Yazdi.

Surprisingly Khomeini, unlike his grandfather, is a liberal secularist who has spoken out against the Iran’s theocratic Islamist government. Khomeini denounces the Iranian government’s “dictatorship by clerics.” He declared Iran’s reformist movement finished in 2003. He also questioned the theocratic principle velayat e faqih and called for a referendum to determine how Iran should be managed in the future. He also supported a non-classical interpretation of Islamic Law to be applied in Iran.
