Merle is a native of Le Sauze in Enchastrayes, where her parents owned a hotel. Merle began skiing at an early age. As a six year old, she took part in her first competition and was awarded 18th place. She finished third in Giant Slalom St. Gervais on 23 January 1983 and took her first World Cup podium. She did not reach her full potential until a few more years later.
Tignes, 6 January 1988 was her first World Cup victory. She won the World cup title for Super-G in 1988, 4 points behind 1988 Olympic champion Sigridwolf. Merle won the Super-G season title four times in succession (1989-1992), an achievement that was only matched later by Katja Seizinger, Germany (1993-1996), and Lindsey Vonn, USA (2009-2012). Merle also won the Giant Slalom World Cup 1992 and 1993. In the World Cup overall standings, she was 2nd behind Austria’s Petra Kronberger.
She later settled away from the ski slopes, in a Camargue farmhouse, to pursue her passion for horses. In a 2012 interview for French newspaper Le Dauphiné libéré, she claimed she had not skied for at least six years, but added she would never miss a ski World Cup on TV.
