Richardson was born in Atlanta in 1968. Richardson attended Lakeside High School, Atlanta, where he played high school football with the Lakeside Vikings.

Richardson only played five games in 1991 with the Steelers, recording two tackles and another on special team. Richardson was not built to play defensive end in a 3-4 defense. This is part of the problem. Richardson was made an inside linebacker by the Steelers, but he struggled to adjust. Bill Cowher was appointed as the new head coach after Chuck Noll’s 1991 season. Cowher tried to change Richardson from inside linebacker to outside linebacker, which was his position for the first three of his college years. Cowher then asked Tom Donahoe, the player development director, if it was too early to let Richardson go. Richardson was traded by the Washington Redskins to Donahoe for a seventh-round draft selection. If a trade wasn’t possible, Richardson would simply have been waived. He was signed by the New York Jets after four games with the Redskins. Richardson’s brief NFL career ended after seven games with Jets at the end of 1992.

Richardson returned to college and earned his master’s degree in business administration from Emory University in Atlanta in 2000, and currently works as a financial analyst for Merrill Lynch in New York City. He was in the World Trade Center for a meeting on the morning of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. His meeting was scheduled to take place on an upper floor of the building, but he was delayed in the lobby before boarding the elevator, and was able to leave the World Trade Center safely after the first plane hit the building.

Richardson was an SEC Academic Honor Roll Selection for all four years. He also received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and graduated from Florida in 1990 with a bachelor’s in economics. In 2003, Richardson was inducted into University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame “Gator Great”.

He is an American former professional footballer who played as a defensive end in two seasons of the National Football League (NFL). Richardson was a college football player for the Florida Gators and received All-American honors. Richardson was a first round pick in 1991’s NFL Draft and played professionally with the New York Jets, Washington Redskins, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Richardson was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. He played defensive end for Galen Hall and Steve Spurrier’s Gators teams, 1987-1990. Richardson was a first-team All- Southeastern Conference selection in 1990 and 1990, as well as an All-American in 1990. He was also selected as a senior team Captain. He had 26.5 quarterback sacks, 50.5 tackles for loss and was the fourth-ranked player on the Gators’ all time record list.

Richardson was the first round draft choice (fifteenth pick overall) of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1991 NFL Draft. Based on a conversation with the former Steelers director of scouting, Max McCartney, with three picks remaining before the Steelers picked at number 15, they had three players targeted that they would be willing to select: Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Alvin Harper, Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Mike Pritchard and Arizona State Sun Devils running back Leonard Russell. When those three players were all selected with the three immediately preceding picks (by the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, respectively), the Pittsburgh draft managers were unprepared and were forced to make a selection before their fifteen-minute time limit expired, and they settled on Richardson.
