He was an American professional and amateur boxer. Davis was the oldest of 10 children and learned boxing from his father as a child. Davis began his amateur career after being inspired by a Muhammad Ali movie. One week after the death of his mother, he won the 1976 Olympic gold Medal. He also won the Val Barker Trophy at Olympics, beating out boxers like Sugar Ray Leonard, Leon Spinks, and Michael Spinks.

In 1977, Davis became a professional boxer. He won his thirteen first fights and challenged Jim Watt to the WBC lightweight title. Watt won in a unanimous fifteen-round decision. With a record 26-1, Davis faced Edwin Rosario in 1984 for the WBC lightweight title. Rosario retained his title by winning a 12-round split decision. In 1988, he made his last attempt at a world title. Buddy McGirt, the IBF junior welterweight champion, defeated Davis in the first round. After the fight, he retired. Davis made a comeback in 1994 as a middleweight. After losing to Dana Rosenblatt in the second round, Davis was forced to retire.

He finished with a professional record of 36–6–1 with 14 KO’s.

He turned professional after the Olympics and went on to compile a professional record of 36–6–1 with 14 knockouts. He retired in 1996. After retirement he became a trainer. Eventually he worked as boxing director at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, where he trained both amateur and professional boxers and MMA fighters. He was also a motivational speaker and a musician.

Davis, an amateur boxer, was trained by his father. His amateur career was outstanding. Davis won the 1976 Olympic gold medal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the lightweight division.
