Hossam Ramzy is one of the most popular and richest Percussionist who was born on December 15, 1953 in Cairo, Egypt. Hossam Ramzy (Arabic : Hsm.rmzy; 15 December 1953-10 September 2019) was an Egyptian composer and percussionist. He collaborated with Western musicians like Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Siouxsie Siux, and also with Arabic musicians like Rachid Taha, Khaled, and Siouxsie Siux.

Timbaland recorded his version of “Khosara”, which was used in the Jay-Z song, “Big Pimpin'” in 2000. Ramzy began to arrange music for pop stars after 2000. He arranged songs for Ricky Martin’s 2005 album Life, and he collaborated with Shakira to produce her album She Wolf in 2005. He also contributed two songs for the soundtrack to Prince of Persia, and one for Conan The Barbarian.

He returned to his roots in 1994 and formed a ten-piece Egyptian ensemble which performed on the album No Quarter. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unleaded. Ramzy and his group gained attention by touring throughout 1995 with Plant and Page in support of the album. Eternal Egypt, Ramzy’s first collaboration with Phil Thornton (English arranger) was released in 1995. Eternal Egypt was a successful album that blended Arabic music with English arrangements. The follow-up albums, Immortal Egypt (and Enchanted Egypt) were released after it sold well. Hossam and his drum section performed with Big Country in Dingwalls club in 1996. The live album Eclectic was then released. He performed at the 1,2,3 Soleils concert with Rachid Taha and Khaled, and backed Khaled for Flying Carpet by Claude Challe.

Ramzy was the son of a Cairo-based family. At an early age, he began tabla and darbuka playing. For a while, he lived in Saudi Arabia and studied traditional Bedouin music. He moved to London in the 1970s and began playing with Andy Sheppard, a saxophonist. He was known as “The Sultan Of Swing” for his collaborations with jazz musicians. He collaborated with Peter Gabriel in 1989 on the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. He was discovered by Frank Asher, the Gipsy Kings and other artists.

Ramzy lived in London, Cairo and with Serena, a Brazilian belly dancer. In 1993’s Son of the Pink Panther, he made a brief appearance.

His last album titled Rock the Tabla released on 30 August 2011. It features Indian composer A.R. Rahman, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Manu Katché and Billy Cobham.
