Her childhood was uneventful at Gympie up until the time her parents relocated to the new pharmacie situated in Brisbane where she went to High School at Somerville House. After graduating from school, she began training as radiographer and from 1975 to 1977, she studied politics and economics from the University of Queensland achieving a Bachelor of Arts. She was married to Michael and had an infant son during her studies at university. In the beginning of the 1980s, they moved from the United States to London, United Kingdom where Sherry worked as a social worker in prison.

In July 2007 Sherry left the banking industry and was appointed the CEO at Carnival Australia, a cruise line that operates brands like P&O and P&O, stating she’d always loved and was passionate about travel. One of the biggest challenges she had to face in her new position is the in-progress investigation of the murder of Dianne Brimble, who died in 2002 aboard P&O Pacific Sky. P&O Pacific Sky, which has caused a lot of damage to the image for the company’s cruise lines prompting some suggestions from the company that they alter its brand name. The reality was that Sherry had been influenced by history of the 75-year-old Cruise Line in Australia and decided to keep the name, working with the advertising agency BMF to change the branding. Sherry set a lofty goal for the company of 1 million Australians cruisers by the year 2020. This goal was met in 2015 when the industry was transformed and became a well-loved form of holiday once more.
