Edelman was born in New York City, and spent her childhood in suburban Spring Valley. Her mother’s death from breast cancer in 1981 was a crucial moment in her childhood and the topic of much of her early writing. Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Evanston, Illinois gave her her bachelor’s degree. She lived in Chicago and interned at Outside magazine. In 1985, she was selected as an American Society of Magazine Editors Summer intern. She then took a job as an editor at Whittle Communications, Knoxville, Tennessee. This was where she discovered her love for personal essays. After graduating, she attended The Nonfiction Writing Program, University of Iowa. There, she studied with Mary Swander and Carol Bly. She earned a master’s in nonfiction writing in 1992.

Edelman’s first book, Motherless Daughters was written while Edelman was still a University of Iowa graduate student. It was sold as a proposal to Addison- Wesley. It was published May 1994. The book rose to the top of bestseller lists in Australia, Canada and the U.S. after a 17-city tour. Motherless Daughters spent 24 weeks on New York Times’ bestseller list. It rose to the top of paperback for 24 weeks. Since then, the book has been published in 12 more countries, including the United Kingdom of France, Italy Germany, China Korea, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Germany.

Her most recent work, essays “Home Ec” appears in the anthology Knitting Yarns: Writers on Knitting, published by W. W. Norton & Company in November 2013.
