Hiromitsu Ochiai (Luo He Bo Man Ochiai Hiromitsu; born December 9, 1953) was a former Japanese professional baseball pitcher. He was the former manager of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball’s Chunichi Dragons. Ochiai is considered one of the greatest players in Japanese baseball history, having won numerous batting awards. He also received the prestigious triple crown award for batting. Ochiai, with 510 career home runs is the sixth most popular player on the NPB all-time list.
Ochiai was inducted in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame (2011). In 1993, the Hiromitsu Ochiai Baseball Hall was opened in Taiji (Wakayama), a new trend in museums dedicated to notable ballplayers.
Since 2004, Hiromitsu Ochiai is the manager of Chunichi Dragons. In 2004, he led the Dragons to the Japan Series. He was again manager in 2006. They won the third attempt in 2007. After leading the Dragons within one game of winning the 2011 Japan Series, his contract was not renewed. His decision- making skills were often criticised. He removed Daisuke Yamai, the starting pitcher, to begin the ninth inning in game five of 2007 Japan Series. Yamai was pitching a perfect game. Closer Hitoki finished the ninth to win the championship for Dragons.

After being selected in the third round, Ochiai, a 25-year-old third baseman, joined Lotte Orions in 1978. Ochiai’s unconventional right-handed style of batting was not appreciated by Masaichi Kaneda, the Lotte manager. However, Isao Harimoto supported Ochiai. Ochiai didn’t quit. Ochiai was a regular player for his team and won the 1982 triple crown batting title. Ochiai also won the Triple Crown in 1986 and 1985, and continued to win titles until 1991.
The Lotte Orions traded Ochiai to the Chunichi Dragons in 1987. Ochiai was a Yomiuri Giants free agent during the 1994 season. Ochiai, now 43 years old, joined the Nippon-Ham Fighters after the Giants signed Kazuhiro Koihara in 1997. Ochiai was forced to retire after the 1998 season.
