Hiromi Isozaki Biography

Birthday Mar 20
Birth Year 1965

Hiromi Isozaki is one of the most popular and richest Sprinter who was born on March 20, 1965 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Hiromi “Kumi”, also known as Ji Qi Gong Mei, is a former Japanese track and field athlete. She competed in sprinting events ranging from 100m to 400m. She set three records at the 1982 Asian Games and won four gold medals. She won a bronze medal in the 400 m at the 1986 Asian Games, and a bronze medal in the 200 meter at the 1987 Asian Athletics Championships. She was also a three time silver medallist at continental level in the 4x400m relay.

After graduation from high school, she became a professional and signed a contract for Nike Japan. She won the 400 m title at Japan Championships 1983, but lost her 200 m title in the same season to Emiko Konishi. In 1984, she regained her 200-meter title and was not beaten in the event again for four more years. Toshie Kitada won the 1989 crown, ending her five-year winning streak. Although she was a popular pick for the 1985 Asian Athletics Championships, her performance was not as impressive. Although she finished eighth in the 200 m final, she could not help the Japanese women reach sixth place in the 4×100 m relay. However, she did win silver in the 4×400 m relay behind an Indian team led by P. T. Usha. She also helped to set an Asian record for the 4x200m relay, which is not often seen. In Hamamatsu, the Konishi, EtsukoHara, Isozaki, and Koshimoto team ran 1:35.90. This record stood for almost thirty years. A Chinese team beat it at the 2015 IAAF World Relays.

Isozaki won a 200 m/400 m double at the Japan Championships in 1987 – the first time a female athlete had done this feat since the longer sprint was introduced to the national program in 1962. The last international medals of her career came at the 1987 Asian Athletics Championships. She claimed a bronze in the 200 m, finishing behind Lydia de Vega of the Philippines and China’s Pan Weixin. She ran the anchor leg for both the 4×100 and 4×400 m relay teams, coming sixth the former but managing a final silver medal in the latter.

She was the first woman to complete a 200 m/400 m double at the Asian Games (a feat P. T. Usha matched four years later) and was Japan’s first individual women’s 400 m champion. After the games Isozaki ran a national record in the 400 m of 53.73 seconds, making her the first Japanese woman to run the distance in less than 54 seconds. She remained the record holder for almost ten years, with Kazue Kakinuma again being the one to improve her standard in 1992.

She was born in Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from Odawara High School, she went on to Tateyama North High School Yamakita. She was an avid volleyball player, and the coach suggested that she start sprinting with her school’s track and field team. She won a triple sprint crown at the Japan National Scholastic Championships in 1982, winning the 100m, 200m and 400m.
