Hifumi Abe is one of the most popular and richest Judoka who was born on August 9, 1997 in Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. Abe currently ranks 25th in the IJF World Rankings, which were conducted before the Olympics. Only the Top 22 would be eligible to qualify. Abe is also the fourth Japanese athlete in the rankings. Officially, Abe was not qualified because Inoue, his head coach, recalls Ebinuma as Japan’s representative for the half- lightweight category.
Abe faced two world champions as his opponents after his second fight. In the quarter-final Abe faced Georgii Zantaraia, a five-time World Championships medalist who was also 2009 World Champion. He managed to score a surprising waza-ari. Abe attempted to pin Zantaraia but the latter managed to escape. Abe made it to the semi-final against Masashi Ebinuma, a triple World Champion and fellow Japanese.
Abe faced teammate Sho Tateyama in an All-Japan semi-final. He threw Tateyama for waza-ari with deashi barai and earned several shidos, but continued on to the final with the former unable to score any throws. He met local Anzaur Ardanov in the final, and threw him for waza-ari with a solid osoto gari. Abe earned his first Grand Slam title since 2014.
Abe is the current half-lightweight World Champion. Abe rose to prominence after becoming Youth Olympic champion in 2014. He won the Tokyo Grand Slam later that year, at just 17-years-old, beating then-World Champion Masashi Ebinuma. He was the silver medalist at the junior World Championships in Fort Lauderdale.
Abe rose to national prominence during the Kodokan Cup, which was his first senior tournament. He became the youngest winner (16 years old) and the first high school student ever to win the Cup in ten year since SatoshiIshii (2004). His victory was unexpected, especially when he beat Masaaki Fukuoka by ippon in less than two minutes with a uki-otoshi. In the final, he defeated Yuki Nishiyama.
