Hideo Azuma Biography

Hideo Azuma is one of the most popular and richest Manga Artist who was born on February 6, 1950 in Urahoro, Japan. Hideo Azuma (Wu Qi hideo , Azuma Hideo, February 6, 1950 – October 13, 2019) was a Japanese manga artist. Azuma made his professional debut in 1969 in the Akita Shoten manga magazine Manga O. His science fiction lolicon-themed works appeared in magazines like Weekly Shonen Champion and Little Pollon, which both went on to become anime television series in early 1980s. He is often called “father of lolicon”.

In 1975, Azuma started serializing his story Yakekuso tenshi in Play Comic’s semimonthly manga magazine. Azuma also started publishing science fiction- themed works in niche magazines like Kiso Tengai or Peke. Jun Ishikawa and Azuma are considered to be part of the original manga creators from the 1970s. Azuma gained a lot of popularity among science fiction lovers thanks to his science fiction parody Fujori Nikki published in Bessatsu Kiso Tengai 1978. Fujori Nikki won the 1979 Seiun Award as Best Comic of Year.

In 2005 he published an autobiographical manga titled Disappearance Diary that has won several awards including the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

Azuma died in hospital on October 13, 2019 due to esophageal cancer at the age of 69.

Azuma’s off-color humor in the Weekly Shonen Champion series Futari 5 to 5nin began to gain popularity in 1972. Azuma also married his assistant in the same year. They had a girl in 1980, and a boy 1983. His wife was called “Assistant” in his works. His son and daughter were credited with “Assistant B”, and “Assistant D”.

Azuma was a student at Hokkaido Urahoro high school and participated in the Hokkaido branch office COM with Monkey Punch, Fumiko Okada, and other artists. After graduating high school in 1968, Azuma moved to Tokyo where he found work at Toppan Printing. After three months, he quit the job to become an assistant to Rentaro Itai as a manga artist. He did uncredited work on Weekly Shonen Sunday series like Mini Mini Manga.

Azuma’s professional debut was in 1969 with the work Ringside Crazy. He quit his job as an assistant to start doing his own work the following year. His work expanded to include both shojo as well as seinen manga. Although his first works were light-hearted, he soon began to incorporate science fiction elements. This was due to his love for the New Hollywood movement in American cinema. He experimented with single-panel manga during this time, as opposed to four panels.

In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, due to stress from his hectic and demanding schedule during 20 years (to that point) as a manga artist, Azuma began drinking heavily, disappeared twice for several months to over a year, attempted suicide at least once, and was finally forcibly committed to an alcohol rehabilitation program. He published in 2005 a manga journal of this experience titled Disappearance Diary. In addition to being published in Japan, this book has been licensed and published in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian and Polish.
