- He plays as a middlefielder for Eliteserien side Stromsgodset. He was a youth representative of Norway at the youth level, having previously played for Valerenga and Stabaek.
Stengel was first known as a part of Veigar Pall Gunnarsson’s transfer to Valerenga in the autumn 2011. This caused much controversy. TV 2 (Norway), on 12 October 2011, revealed that Gunnarsson had been transferred to Valerenga at 1 million NOK. However, Valerenga paid 4 million NOK as a transfer fee for Stengel’s option. Stengel stated in February 2012 that he wanted to be remembered as a footballer and not as someone who was involved in controversial football transfers.
After Stabæk was relegated from Tippeligaen in 2012, Stengel was one of the key-players in the young Stabæk-team that finished the 2013 season second in the First Division and won promotion back to Tippeligaen. His contract with Stabæk expired after the season and he joined Vålerenga as a free agent ahead of the 2014 season, signing a four-year contract with the club.
On 20 November 2017, Strømsgodset Toppfotball announced that Stengel had signed a three-year deal from 1 January 2018.
Stengel was born Lorenskog and grew up playing for Hokksund. He joined Stabaek in his youth years. He was the youngest goal scorer in the Norwegian Second Division when he started playing for the senior B team, Stabaek 2. He scored his first senior goal in May 2010, at the age of 14 years and 261 day.
