He was fourth in the high jump at the 1978 European Championships, Prague, Czechoslovakia, and sixth at 1979 European Indoor Championships, Vienna, Austria. At the 1976 Olympic Games, he did not make it to the final round. However, he was fourth at the 1980 Olympic Games. He jumped 2.29m, but missed the bronze medal by 2 cms. Gerd Wessig and Jorg Freimuth won the bronze and the gold medals. Track and Field News ranked Lauterbach sixth in the world for that season.

Lauterbach was the representative of SC Turbine Erfurt in domestic competitions. He was awarded silver medals at the East German championships 1976, 1977 1978, 1978, 1980, and 1981. A bronze medal was won in 1981. Rolf Beilschmidt was the East German champion in those years. In 1979, Lauterbach was the East German indoor champion.

On the national level Lauterbach won silver medals in this event at the East German championships in 1970, 1972, 1976 and 1981. Additionally he won a bronze medal in 1974. He became East German indoor champion in 1982.
