Henri Isingoma Biography

Henri Kahwa Isingoma, a Democratic Republic of the Congo Anglican Bishop, was born November 24, 1958. From August 2009, when he was consecrated, he was the third Primate of the Anglican Church of the Congo. Isingoma announced that he was leaving office for a health improvement break and to return to theological academia on 11 March 2016. This announcement came three years before the completion of his second five-year term in office and seven years before the age of retirement of 65. He was replaced by Masimango Katanda, who was enthroned on 12 September 2016.

Isingoma can be described as a moderate conservative. While he criticizes the Episcopal Church of the United States’ departure from orthodox Anglicanism, he also supports those orthodoxes that remain in the church. He supports the Global South (Anglican), GAFCON, and the Anglican Church of North America. He is also a member the Anglican Consultative Council. Isingoma provided temporary oversight to Anglican Missions in the Americas from April 2012 to those who had left the Anglican Church of Rwanda.

He was educated at the Nyankunde Institute and the Boga Institute. He graduated in 1977. In 1984, he received a degree from the Superior Institute of Anglican Theology in Theology and Human Sciences. In 1997, he also received a master’s in Theology from the Evangelical Theology Faculty in Bangui, Central African Republic.

From 1997 to 2007, he was the Bishop of Katanga. In 2007, he was elected Bishop of Boga. This position remained in his possession until 2009. In a retreat for bishops held in Goma on 28 April 2009, he was elected third Primate of the Anglican Church of Congo and Archbishop of that country. He was elected third Primate and Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Congo with four votes out of seven. He is also the Bishop of Kinshasa.

He was reelected for another five years at the meeting of the House of the Bishops of the Province that took place at Kinshasa, on 20 August 2014. He defeat by five votes against four, Masimango Katanda, Bishop of the Diocese of Kindu. He stated after his reelection that the priorities for his new term would include church-planting and addressing his country socio-economical problems. He also admitted the division of his province in two internal provinces due to his size.
