Helen Thorpe, an Irish-American writer and freelance journalist was born January 23, 1965. She served as the First Lady of Colorado from her husband’s induction until their divorce in 2015. She has written three books and contributed to major American magazines and newspapers.

Thorpe also wrote three books. Scribner published Just Like Us in 2009, following the lives of four Denver-based girls of Mexican descent. It also deals with issues related to immigration to the United States. The Colorado Book Award was awarded to it, and it was also named by the Washington Post as one of the top books that year. Scribner published her second book, Soldier Girls in 2014. The book describes the experiences of three women who joined the Army National Guard just before 9/11. Although they had only planned to serve part-time in the military, the three women served in Afghanistan and Iraq. One of the three women was a single mother with three children. Time Magazine named Soldier Girls the best nonfiction book that year. The Newcomers is her third book. It follows 22 teenagers who have just arrived from war-torn countries. They take an English Language Acquisition class at South High School, Denver, and document their first year as Americans. Thorpe examines what it means “to be American” as she learns the stories of these refugees. She also offers her perspective on immigration, multiculturalism and America’s place on the international stage. The J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award finalist was named to the Newcomers.

John Hickenlooper met Thorpe in 2000, at Thorpe’s 37th birthday party. He was still living in Texas. In Austin, they were married in a Quaker ceremony. The couple announced their intention to end their 10 year marriage in July 2012. They divorced in January 2015. Their son Teddy was born July 5, 2002.
