Helen Margaret Szuty, born 3 September 1957, is an Australian politician. From 1992 to 1995, she was an independent member in the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly.

She is the South Australian Best candidate for Playford in the 2018 state election.

Szuty immigrated to Burra in South Australia in 1999. From 2001 to 2011, she edited and published “The Visitors Monthly”, a Burra magazine. She was also the spokesperson of the Group of Concerned Burra and District Residents and Ratepayers Action Group (Regional Council of Goyder). She was unsuccessful in her bid to contest the Burra Ward of Regional Council of Goyder’s 2010 and 2014 local elections, as well as a 2016 supplementary election.

She ran for the ACT Legislative Assembly in 1992. She was elected running mate to Michael Moore, an independent sitting on the Moore Independents Group ticket. However, she sat in Assembly as an independent. Moore’s ticket in 1995 saw her lose her seat. She tried again to regain her seat as an unaligned Independent candidate in 1998, but she was unsuccessful.

Brendan Smyth, ACT Minister of Urban Services, claimed that Szuty made inappropriate representations to him for a client of a real estate agency where Szuty was recently employed. Szuty claimed that her client was in severe financial hardship. Smyth made a confidential complaint to the Real Estate Institute of the ACT. Szuty was fired by her employer. Smyth was asked by Szuty to withdraw his complaint, which he ignored. Szuty alleged that she was allegedly defamed and that Smyth’s actions had adversely affected her employment, which ultimately led to her leaving the ACT. Szuty filed a defamation action at the ACT Supreme Court. Chief Justice Higgins was harsh in his criticisms of Smyth in a 2004 finding. However, he ruled that Szuty’s defamatory remarks were protected by qualified privilege.
