Petri started water polo in high school on the boys’ team. She helped to start a girls’ program at Miramonte High School, and served as team captain for two consecutive years. Maureen O’Toole at UC Berkeley recruited Petri in 1997. She played collegiate water polo between 1997 and 2001. Petri was awarded All- America and All-MPSF Honors at Cal in 1998, 1999, and she finished her college career scoring 96 goals. Petri was a member the first US women’s Olympic polo team. She finished her senior season at Berkeley with an integrative biology degree. For the 2004-2005 season she played for Rari-Nantes in Florence, Italy. She is currently part of the US senior women’s team.

Petri represented the United States at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships in March 2007. The United States became the world champions after a string of wins. Petri won a gold medal at the 2003 World Aquatic Championships, in Barcelona, Spain, and again in Rome in 2009. She is now a three-time World Champion.

She was inducted into the Waterpolo Hall of Fame with the class of 2018.
