In semifinals of that event, he set a new Australian record (52.97). He was also part the Australian men’s 4×100-meter medley relay team, which won bronze at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

He qualified for the 200- and 100-meter backstrokes at the 2008 Australian Swimming Championships, where he placed second and first.

In early 2009, he qualified to swim at the 2009 World Championships; however, two weeks before championships he withdrew from the Australian team due to an injury.

Stoeckel won his heat in the 100-metre backstroke at 2008 Olympics and was seventh fastest to reach the semifinals with a time 53.93. In 52.97, Stoeckel won the second semifinal, breaking the Australian, Commonwealth, and Olympic records to be the fastest to the final. He finished third in the final with a time 53.18 and tied for the bronze medal. American swimmer Aaron Peirsol set a new world record of 52.54 seconds in order to defend his Olympic title.
