Hassan hails from Al-Shaafah, Al-Bukamal District in Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria, near the Iraqi border. He moved to Al Bukamal in 1996 from ash-Sha’fa for high school. He moved to Damascus in 2000 to study English literature at Damascus University. He moved to the United Kingdom in 2006, and completed an MA degree in International Relations at Nottingham University. He graduated in 2006 and moved to the United Arab Emirates to become a journalist at The National newspaper. This newspaper covers domestic and Gulf affairs. Since the 2011 uprising, he covered the Syrian conflict. He conducted extensive interviews with members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant since its inception in his hometown in June 2014.
