Harry Duynhoven Biography

Harry Duynhoven is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 22, 1955 in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. Duynhoven was a New Plymouth native, born 22 June 1955. At sixteen, he left Spotswood College to become an electrician. He later became a technical teacher at both the collegiate level and at polytechnic.

Duynhoven, in 2003, raised concerns about his status and whether he had violated electoral law. This disqualified him from keeping his seat. It was the responsibility of the Speaker to determine if a vacancy existed. Duynhoven had applied to regain his Dutch citizenship. Duynhoven’s father was Dutch and Duynhoven was born in the Netherlands. However, Duynhoven lost his citizenship temporarily due to a change in Netherlands law. Duynhoven would be disqualified from keeping his seat if he applied for foreign citizenship, according to electoral law. On 23 July 2003, the Speaker declared that the Parliament’s Privileges committee, which was responsible for determining if a vacancy existed, would examine the matter and that Duynhoven would follow their recommendations. The Privileges committee was advised by the Solicitor General that the law was clear and Duynhoven’s place became vacant on June 11, 2003. The Privileges committee voted unanimously that Duynhoven was not eligible to hold his seat and that it was vacated. To allow Duynhoven, however, the government passed an act retroactively changing the law.

Duynhoven was elected as Mayor of New Plymouth in October 2010. Since leaving office in October 2013, he is currently a district councillor representing the New Plymouth City ward and a board member on Taranaki’s district health board.

In October 2010, Duynhoven was elected Mayor of New Plymouth. Three years later, on 12 October 2013, Mr Duynhoven became the first New Plymouth mayor since Edward Hill in 1956 to be ousted after one term.”

Duynhoven received the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal in 1990. In 2012, Duynhoven was made a Companion to the Queen’s Service Order for his services as a Member.

Harry James Duynhoven QSO, born 1955, is a New Zealand politician. He is also a member of the New Zealand Labour Party. From 2010 to 2013, he was New Plymouth’s mayor and the surrounding areas. He was a Member for New Plymouth from 1987-1990, 1993-2003 and again 2003-2008.

Duynhoven was elected to Parliament during the 1987 election. He won the New Plymouth seat from Tony Friedlander, an incumbent National Party MP. He lost the seat to National’s John Armstrong in 1990, but he won it back in 1993. He lost the 2008 election to Jonathan Young, New Zealand National Party candidate for Jonathan Young, by 105 votes. This was the narrowest margin of victory in the election.

Duynhoven served as a Minister outside Cabinet of Helen Clark’s Labour Government with the portfolio of Associate Minister of Transport, and later, Minister for Transport Safety and Associate Minister of Energy until his government’s defeat. He did not stand as a party list candidate in the 2008 general election.
