Faltermeyer was the son of Anneliese Schmidt, a homemaker, as well as Hugo Faltermeier (a construction businessman). His parents, who were the owners of a civil engineering company, encouraged him to play piano from the age of six. A Nuremberg music professor noticed that Faltermeyer was an absolute pitch at the age of 11. In his youth, he was exposed to classical music and developed an interest in rock ‘n’ roll. He was an organist in a rock band and studied piano and trumpet at the Munich music school. He found work in a recording studio while he was waiting to start university studies. He was able to engineer major classical sessions for the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label in just three years. Giorgio Moroder saw his potential and brought him to Los Angeles in 1978 to arrange the soundtrack to Midnight Express. In the ensuing decade, Moroder and Faltermeyer collaborated again, producing several Donna Summer albums as well as hits for other artists. Soon Faltermeyer had earned an international reputation for his precise craftsmanship and innovative use of synthesizer technology.

Faltermeyer is most well-known for his composition of the “Axel F” theme for Beverly Hills Cop. This was a popular synth-pop hit from the 1980s. He also composed the “Top Gun Anthem”, the theme for the feature film Top Gun, and the music to the Chevy Chase Fletch feature films Fletch and Fletch Lives. He won two Grammy Awards for his Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop projects: the first for Best Album of Original Score for a Motion Picture or Television Special in 1986, as a cowriter for the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack; the second for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1987 with guitarist Steve Stevens for the Top Gun Anthem.

In 1990, he co-produced the album Behaviour with Pet Shop Boys at his studio near Munich. The album was released later the same year.
