He is an American football coach. Over 16 seasons in the National Football League, Nickerson was a linebacker for four different teams, from 1987 through 2002. Nickerson spent his prime with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nickerson was able to play in the middle of a 4-3 defense for Tony Dungy and Sam Wyche. Nickerson also played in a 3-4 defense with Pittsburgh Steelers. Nickerson was a 4-3 player and was selected to the All-Decade Team of the National Football League 1990s.

Nickerson was appointed head football coach at Bishop O’Dowd High school in Oakland, California on April 15, 2010. This traditional powerhouse has produced many future NFL players like Langston Walker, Kirk Morrison and Eric Bjornson. Nickerson led the Dragons’ to two consecutive league titles, and produced nearly 20 scholarship athletes over a three-year period. Nickerson was relieved of his position as head coach on November 18, 2013.

Nickerson was appointed linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears on February 23, 2007. He had previously coached for Lovie Smith, his Tampa Bay position coach. He resigned as Bears linebackers coach due to family health issues on January 8, 2008.
