Schmid holds a PhD in Sports Science. He was appointed to IAAF’s athletes commission in 1999. He actively participates in anti-drug campaigns, and encourages children to engage in sport.
He also won silver in the 400m hurdles, the 4×400 m relay, and bronze in the 400m hurdles at 1987 World Championships. He finished 0.02 seconds behind Edwin Moses, the gold medalist in the 400 m hurdles. Schmid’s duel with Moses in the late 1970s and early 80s are well-known. Schmid was the last person who beat Moses before his streak a record of 122 consecutive wins. Moses described him as “I would wake up in the morning, and in California are about nine hours ahead Germany.” I would think to myself, “Harald probably has finished his workout by now. I need to get to work!” Guys like him were my motivation.

Schmid was a member of the West German 4×400 m relay team and won bronze at the 1976 Summer Olympics, Montreal. He also won bronze as an individual in the 400m hurdles at 1984 Summer Olympics, Los Angeles.
His personal record in the 400m hurdles was 47.48 seconds (achieved twice, in 1982 and at World Championships 1987). This was at one time the European record and was also the second fastest time.
In 2016, he was inducted into Germany’s Sports Hall of Fame.
