Boakai represented Canada at the U20 level, and was part of the team that went to Northern Ireland for 2014 Milk Cup. Canada coach Benito Floro called Boakai up to the senior team in October 2014, after a strong showing by the youth teams and continued presence with Edmonton. However, he did not participate.
Boakai scored his first goal in the NASL against the San Antonio Scorpions in a 4–0 win on 5 July 2015. His contract with FC Edmonton expired at the end of the 2015 season.
On 11 July 2016 Boakai signed with Landskrona, who play in Division 1 Södra, the third tier of football in Sweden, which was to run through 2017 November. In November 2016, Landskrona announced that Boakai’s contract was terminated.
After two years spent with the reserves, Boakai signed professional by FC Edmonton (North American Soccer League) on February 20, 2013. He became the youngest ever NASL player to be signed. Boakai’s professional debut was made for Edmonton on 16 June 2013, against the Carolina Railhawks. He played in the 65th minute for Sadi Jalali, and became the youngest player to ever play in an NASL match. Edmonton won the game 1-1.

Boakai was the son of Liberian parents, Boakai, in Teldou (a small southwestern Guinean village located just a few kilometers from the Sierra Leone border). When he was seven years old, he moved to Edmonton, Alberta. Boakai was a player for Xtreme FC before joining FC Edmonton’s reserves. After trying out with the side, he joined FC Edmonton in 2011.
Boakai was a former player for Canada’s U15 soccer team while playing with the Edmonton reserves. Boakai then represented Canada U17 in the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship. He scored against Jamaica U17 side as Canada reached the semi-finals of the tournament and qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2013.
Boakai scored his first goal for FC Edmonton against Ottawa Fury FC in the 2014 Canadian Championship. FC Edmonton won the game 3–1 and advanced to the semi-finals.
