Hans-Peter Martin is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on August 11, 1957 in Bregenz, Vorarlberg, Austria. Hans- Peter Martin, an Austrian journalist, author, and politician was born 11 August 1957. He has served as a Member in the European Parliament from 1999 to 2014.

He accused MEPs from all parties of fraudulently claiming reimbursement for travel and subsistence expenses in 2004. He presented evidence that MEPs signed the register early in the morning to claim their daily allowance. Then they left the building immediately. The accusations were broadcast on German TV and caused a commotion. Hans Gert Pottering, the former spokesperson of the European Parliament, dismissed Martin’s allegations as being unnecessarily agressive. Pat Cox, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Parliament, stated that he would prefer to handle the matter internally.

The second mandate went to Austrian Karin Resetarits, a former journalist with the Austrian public broadcaster ORF and a private radio station. However, Martin and Resetarits soon found themselves in heavy disagreement and ceased to work together. She later joined the Liberal group in the European Parliament on June 7, 2005 and was not reelected.

Martin’s list also competed in the Austrian legislative elections of 2006, but received only 2.8% of the vote and thus was blocked from entry into the Austrian parliament by the requirement to at least have 4% of the vote. Martin explained the unexpectedly low result with accusations of “expedient but contrary to the rule” use of the secretarial allowance, which were widely publicised in the Austrian media. The later court ruling stated that Martin used the funds correctly and did not benefit from the money, but as he did not follow some formal requirements he was ordered to repay the funds. Martin argued that this was a political decision.

Hans-Peter Martin entered the 2004 European Parliament election as an independent candidate on his party list “Hans Peter Martin’s List – For genuine control in Brussels” (Liste Hans-Peter Martin – Fur echte Kontrolle im Brüssel). He received an astonishing 14% of votes as an independent, more than either the Greens or right-wing Austrian Freedom Party. Furthermore, he won two seats in Austria’s European Parliament. His efforts to reduce the vote share of far-right parties have been widely acknowledged.
