Lahlum is a member of the Porsgrunn chess club and has served as captain for his club at team chess events. His other accomplishments include organizing and coordinating several tournaments. In 2006, he was the editor of Norsk sjakkblad, the Norwegian Chess Federation’s magazine. Lahlum’s unique style of organizing tournaments is equally innovative. Politically, Lahlum represents the Socialist Left Party (SV) and became the leader of the county chapter in Oppland in February 2010. He has also served as leader of SV’s local chapter in Gjøvik. In the 2017 Norwegian parliamentary election he was their top ballot candidate in Oppland.

Lahlum was born in Mo i Rana and grew up Rodoy in a small community he didn’t find enjoyable. He called his childhood “gloomy”. Lahlum completed his cand.philol. In 2002, Lahlum received his cand.philol (master’s degree in history) from the University of Oslo. This included subjects in political science and religion history. He has been an advisor and lecturer at the Lillehammer University College since completing his studies.
