Hans Hoogervorst Biography

Hans Hoogervorst is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 19, 1956 in Haarlem, Netherlands. Johannes Franciscus Hoogervorst, born 19 April 1956, is a former Dutch politician from the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy. He is also an economist. Since 1 July 2011, he is the Chairman of International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).

Hoogervorst was elected a Member of Congress after 1994’s election. He took office 17 May 1994 and served as frontbencher for Finances. Hoogervorst was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives in 1998. He took office on the 3rd August 1998. Following the conclusion of the NIOD Report into the Srebrenica massacre, the Cabinet Kok II resigned in April 2002. However, they continued to serve as demissionary. Hoogervorst was elected as a Member of Congress again after 2002’s election. He took office on 23 May 2002. Hoogervorst, who was elected as Minister of Finance in 2002’s Cabinet Balkenende I took office on 22 July 2002. Four months later, the Cabinet Balkenende I was disbanded. Hoogervorst was appointed Minister of Economic Affairs. Hoogervorst was elected again as a Member of Congress, and he took office on the 30th of January 2003. Hoogervorst, who was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives in 2003, was appointed Minister of Health, Welfare, and Sport to the Cabinet Balkenende II. He took office on 27th May 2003. The Cabinet Balkenende II was disbanded on 30 June 2006. It continued in a demissionary role until it was replaced with the interim Cabinet Balkenende III. Hoogervorst remained as Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, which took office on 7 July 2006. Hoogervorst declared that he would not stand for the 2006 election, but he did serve as the campaign manager. Following the formation of the Cabinet Balkenende III on 22 February 2007, the Cabinet Balkenende II was replaced by the Cabinet Balkenende 4.

In 2007 Hoogervorst succeeded Arthur Docters van Leeuwen as director of AFM, the Dutch financial market supervisory organization.

Hoogervorst semi-retired from national politics and became active in the public sector, in August 2007 he was nominated as Chairman of the Executive Board of the Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM), taking office on 15 September 2007. In May 2008 Hoogervorst was nominated as Vice Chairman of the Supervisory board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), taking office on 29 May 2008. In June 2010 Hoogervorst was elected as Chairman of the Supervisory board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions, taking office on 9 June 2010. In June 2011 Hoogervorst was nominated as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), he resigned as Chairman of the Authority for the Financial Markets and Chairman of the International Organization of Securities Commissions the same day he was installed as Chairman of the International Accounting Standards Board, taking office on 1 July 2011.

Hoogervorst was an international bank officer at the National Bank of Washington (Washington, D.C.), and from 1986 to 1987, he was a policy officer in international monetary affairs at The Dutch Ministry of Finance. He was a policy advisor on finance for the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, a parliamentary party in Congress from 1988 to 1994 and a member of Parliament from 1994 to 1998.

Hoogervorst was educated at a Haarlem Gymnasium from June 1968 to June 1974. He applied to the University of Amsterdam in Jul 1974, majoring in Modern history. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1981 after completing his secondary education. In 1983, he received a Master’s degree in international relations at Johns Hopkins University SAIS, Washington, D.C.

From 3 August 1998 Hoogervorst was State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment in the second Kok government. On 22 July 2002 he was appointed Minister of Finance in the first Balkenende government. From 16 October 2002 he was also responsible for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. On 27 May 2003 he was appointed Minister of Health, Welfare and Sports in the second Balkenende government. In this position, Hoogervorst introduced a basic health insurance policy, mandatory for all registered inhabitants, but executed by private insurers.
