Buckling is a member of the Australia women’s national water polo team. At the 2011 Canada Cup, she scored a goal in the first period in the gold medal match against China that the Australian team ended up winning. She competed in the Pan Pacific Championships in January 2012 for the Australian Stingers. She scored a goal in a Stingers 8–7 win over the United States. In 2011, her goal was to make the national team and compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics. In February 2012, she was named to the final training squad for the 2012 Summer Olympics. She attended training camp that started on 20 February 2012 at the Australian Institute of Sport. The team of seventeen players will be cut to thirteen before the team departs for the Olympic games, with the announcement being made on 13 June. She was part of the Stingers squad that competed in a five-game test against Great Britain at the AIS in late February 2012. This was the team’s first matches against Great Britain’s national team in six years.
Ryan was her coach at her local club side for 20 months. She was fifteen years old when Ryan became her coach. Her first international appearance for Australia as an under-17 athlete occurred at the Pythia Cup 2008 in Greece, where Ryan’s team finished second. It also took in stops in Italy, Hungary and Hungary. She was part of the European tour 2010 under-19 women’s water polo team. As a junior national team member, she was part of the team that traveled to California in 2010 and was also part of the squad that participated in international friendlies against Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. In July 2011, she was again part of the junior team and was invited to join the training squad of the junior national squad, which was in Perth as part of preparation for the Junior World Championships. She was part of the Australian team that came third in the FINA Junior World Champs 2011.

Hannah Buckling, born 3 June 1992 in Sydney (Australia) is an Australian water-polo centre back. She was educated at the Wenona Girls School. She is currently a student at the University of Sydney, where she is completing a Bachelor of Science. As a 12-year-old, she started water polo. As a junior, she represented New South Wales in international competitions. She also played club water polo with the Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers. She is a member of the Sydney Uni Lions National Water Polo League. She was the Australian representative on both the junior and senior levels. Her first international cap came during the 2008 Australian Junior Tour, at the Pythia cup. She was part of the Australian team that came third in the FINA Junior World Championships 2011. Ryan was able to increase Buckling’s practice intensity and make her a more serious player. She was a member the New South Wales Development Squad and competed in the 2007 16 & Under National Championships Girls. She scored 15 goals. She represented New South Wales again at the 2008 16 & Under National Championships Girls, where she scored 13 goals. She scored just 8 goals at the 2008 18 & Under National Championships Girls. She scored 8 goals in 2009 at the 18 & Under Girls National Championship as a New South Wales team member. She also scored 8 goals as a New South Wales player at the 20 & Under National Championships Junior Women that year. She scored 18 goals at the 18 & Under Girls National Championship, and 6 goals at the 20 & Under National Championships for Junior Women in 2010. She scored 8 goals at the 20 & Under Junior Women National Championships in 2011. Her team placed second at the Perth, Western Australia event that year. Her training consisted of daily swimming at the pool and three sessions a week at the gym. She would play in as many as three games per week during the summer. She would only compete in one game per week during winter.
Buckling prefers to wear cap number six and plays in the centre back position. She started playing water polo as a twelve-year-old in Year 7 at Wenona Girls School. In 2011, she was named a Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness/St Andrew’s College Foundation Awards winner because of her water polo. She has a water polo scholarship from the New South Wales Institute of Sport.
