Salihi made his first move outside of the country in January 2005. He joined Panionios, then Alpha Ethniki, on a three year contract. The young striker from Albania managed to play six games, mostly as a substitute for the final few minutes. After the season ended, he left the club and returned to Albania. He stated many years later that the transfer was a mistake and that he wasn’t ready to leave the country at such a young age.
Salihi scored his first goal for the Albanian national team in a 3–0 win over Malta on 23 August 2007. He was sent in the game on the 22nd minute replacing Erjon Bogdani. Only after 12 minutes played, The Bomber took advantage of a mistake made by the Maltese goalie and scored. Salihi also scored the advantage goal in the unofficial friendly against Milan for the Taçi Oil Cup; the match eventually ended 3–3 with Albania losing on penalty shootouts.
In the 2007–08 season, Salihi enjoyed a decent season at the club, becoming the league’s joint 4th top scorer along with Carsten Jancker of SV Mattersburg with 12 league goals. Despite this, SV Ried only finished 7th out of 10 in the league. In the 2008–09 season Salihi improved himself to 14 league goals at Ried, scoring one fourth of his team’s goals. Ried placed fifth at the end of the season. On the 2009–10 season Salihi played 6 games which he score twist for his club but couple weeks later he was sold to Rapid Wien.
Salihi returned to Albania in 2005 and started playing for Tirana from the 2005-06 seasons. Salihi scored in his first match after returning to Albania. Tirana won the Albanian Superliga 2-1 at Vllaznia Shkoder. Salihi also scored a brace against Dinamo on the fourth day of the match. This included a last- minute winner to save his side one point. He was then followed by another brace against Skenderbeu Corce a week later. He was a great success, winning the Albanian Cup as well as the Golden Boot for being the highest scorer in the Albanian Superliga.

Salihi began his professional career with his boyhood club Vllaznia Shkoder. He was promoted to the first team in 2002-03 season by coach Artan Bushati; he also made two appearances in the team’s final race against eventual champions Tirana. His breakthrough season was the 2003-04 season. He scored his first goal in Albanian Superliga, in a 4-1 home loss to Partizani Tirana. He scored four goals in cup’s 9-0 away victory against Ada Velipoje during the second leg. Salihi completed his first full season with 14 goals in 33 league games, Vllaznia coming third.
Salihi was awarded his first top-flight goal-trick in Vllaznia’s 7-0 demolition of Laci on 23 October 2004. He was the most prolific striker in the 2004-05 season, scoring 16 goals in 20 matches. This earned him a transfer from Greece.
He continued with Tirana for another half season, again being the highest scorer in the league before he left to purchase a career outside Albania. During his time at Tirana, Salihi became well-known all over the world for his goalscoring abilities. He finished 8th in The IFFHS World’s best Top Division Goal Scorer 2006. Salihi later would go on to say that the transfer to Tirana was the best choice of his career, adding that at Tirana he matured as a player and person.

Salihi opened his scoring account in the 2010–11 season in the match versus SV Mattersburg on 22 August 2010. It was followed by a brace in the 3–2 home win against Kapfenberger on 25 September. Then he scored in the match day 4 of UEFA Europa League Group L against CSKA Sofia as the match was lost. Salihi produced a splendid performance later that month by netting four goals in the 5–0 home win against LASK Linz which lifted his tally to 7 seven goals. The goals were followed by the winner against Austria Wien which lifted the team in 6th position, 5 points short of “European zone”.
