He is the offensive advisor to the Dallas Renegades (XFL). Mumme was previously the head football coach at Iowa Wesleyan College and Valdosta State University. Mumme is a pioneer of the air raid offensive.
In 1992, Mumme was appointed head coach of Valdosta State University. Mumme’s record at Valdosta State University was 40-17-1. He led the team to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals in 1996 and 1994. Valdosta State hadn’t made it this far before. They were consistently ranked among the top 20 in Division II and were ranked #1 in the country in Division II during part of 1996’s Gulf South Conference championship. The University of Central Florida defeated Valdosta State 31-14 in 1994 to win the NCAA Division IAA national football championship. As the NCAA Division II player of the Year, Chris Hatcher was awarded the Harlon Hills Award.
In 1998 Kentucky won its season opener against Louisville at the christening of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium by the lopsided score of 68–34. Kentucky improved to 3–0 with wins over Eastern Kentucky University and Indiana and was ranked #25 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. Losses to #8 Florida and at #22 Arkansas followed. Kentucky then defeated South Carolina and #21 LSU. A close loss to Georgia on a missed last-second field goal was followed by victories over eventual SEC West champion Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. At 7–3 and ranked #25 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, Kentucky then lost its regular season finale at Tennessee. Tim Couch was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Kentucky then played in the Outback Bowl, Kentucky’s first New Year’s Day bowl in 47 years. Despite jumping out to a 14–3 lead, Penn State won 26–14. Couch elected to forgo his senior season and enter the 1999 NFL Draft, where the Cleveland Browns selected him with the #1 overall pick.
In 1999 Kentucky finished the regular season 6–5 before losing the 1999 Music City Bowl to Syracuse, 20–13. Season highlights included victories over #20 Arkansas, LSU, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Indiana.
Mumme was appointed Iowa Wesleyan College’s head coach in 1989. He finished 7-4 his first season and led the team to the 1991 national quarterfinals, which was the school’s first playoff appearance. Mumme’s 1990 team was the best in passing offense, and the 1989-91 squads were second in this category. Mumme was named the NAIA District Coach-of-the Year in 1989 and 1991 at Iowa Wesleyan.

Mumme began his coaching career as an offensive coordinator at FoyH. Moody High School, Corpus Christi (Texas), from 1976 to 1978. He was Aransas Pass High School’s head coach in 1979. Mumme was an assistant coach (quarterbacks, receivers) at West Texas State University from 1980 to 1981. He also served as offensive coordinator at UTEP from 1982 to 1985. From 1986 through 1988, he was the head coach at Copperas Cove High School.
Mumme, after a 18-month hiatus, returned to football in the role of 12th head coach for Southeastern Louisiana Lions. After the school’s football program was terminated in 1985, Mumme decided to return to competition in 2003 at NCAA Division I-AA. The team was 5-7 in its first season and finished 2004 with a 7-4 record. The team defeated #6 McNeese State 51-17 and was ranked in the Top 25 of the national I-AA rankings. In 2003, Southeastern Louisiana ranked #1 among NCAA Division IAA teams for total offense per match (537.1 yards), and passing offense/game (408 yards).
On December 2, 1996 the University of Kentucky announced that it had hired Mumme to replace Bill Curry as head coach of its football program. Kentucky had gone 9–24 (.273) through the prior three years. In Mumme’s first year the team improved to a 5–6 record. The season highlight was a win over #20 Alabama, a team Kentucky had not beaten since 1922. Led by sophomore quarterback Tim Couch, Kentucky’s offense set multiple school, SEC and NCAA records.
