Habib Shartouni Biography

Habib Shartouni is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 24, 1958 in Charoun, Mount Lebanon Governorate, Lebanon. Habib Tanious Shartouni, born April 24, 1958 (Arabic : Hbyb lshrtwny ), is the convicted assassin for the Lebanese president elect Bachir Gemayel.

Shartouni was transferred to Lebanese justice. Bachir’s older brother Amine Gemayel succeeded him to the presidency after his assassination. Habib was held in Roumieh prison for eight years without an official trial. He escaped from Roumieh during the final Syrian offensive in Lebanon, which was meant to overthrow the government of Michel Aoun. Shartouni was executed by the Lebanese Court on October 20, 2017.

Two days later Shartouni was arrested by the Lebanese Forces. Stating with no regrets or fear, the 24-year-old Shartouni confessed at a press conference before being handed over to the Lebanese Justice by the Lebanese Forces, he called Bachir a traitor and accused him of selling the country to Israel. Shartouni confessed, “I was given the explosives and the fancy long-range electronic detonator in West Beirut’s Ras Beirut neighborhood by Nabil al- Alam, Chief intelligence of the Party”. “Alam” had close ties to the Syrian Intelligence Services and right after the assassination fled to Syria and vanished.

Shartouni was finally determined to execute the operation. He escaped to the second floor of the building that housed the Kataeb Party Office, Achrafieh, on the night of September 13th 1982. Since he shared the third floor with his grandmother and sister, his behavior didn’t raise suspicion. Bachir and his companions were seated on the platform, so he entered the room directly above and hid 40-50 kg of high explosives.

Maronite Christian Habib Tanious Shartouni was born in Aley in Mount Lebanon in a small village called Chartoun (Arabic: shrtwn). He was only a few years away from the civil war’s outbreak in the 1970s when he became inspired and joined the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. He volunteered to be a soldier in the SSNP station in Aley during the Lebanese Civil War.

He was advised by his parents to leave Lebanon for Cyprus and then France. There he studied business at a Paris university. He had lived in Paris for his first year away from politics until 1977, when he joined the SSNP and has been an active member since.

On October 20, 2017, the Judicial Council, Lebanon’s highest state security court, sentenced Habib Shartouni and Nabil al-Alam to death in absentia in the case of the 1982 assassination of President-elect Bashir Gemayel. The Council also stripped former Syrian Social National Party members Shartouni and Alam of their civil rights.
