Vanhengel was a teacher until 1981 after he graduated in 1979. After serving in the army (1981-1982), he began to work as a spokesperson for Annemie Neyts, then secretary of state. Guy Verhofstadt, the first party leader for liberals, was promoted to spokesperson for the party PVV (1984-1985) a few years later. Verhofstadt takes Vanhengel along to help him with his staff (1985-1988) when Verhofstadt is elected vice-premier. Guy Vanhengel was appointed Tourism Flanders manager in 1988. He was then seconded to the cabinet of Patrick Dewael, who held the position of minister of Cultural Affairs (1988-1989). Vanhengel was the party spokesperson for the PVV (later VLD) from 1989 to 1995.
In 1995 Vanhengel turned member of the Brussels Parliament, later to become minister in the Brussels government (2000) annex minister in the Flemish Community Commission – Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie and the Common Community Commission -Gemeenschappelijke Gemeenschapscommissie.
