Caron is a member of his seat in the House of Commons of Canada during the election of 2011. He represents the electoral district of Rimouski- Neigette–Temiscouata–Les Basques as a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP). The NDP’s critic over Finance along with for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, but resigned from Shadow Cabinet of the NDP in February 2017 in order to seek the presidency in the New Democratic Party of Canada.

Caron is a native of Rimouski, Quebec. He graduated with a bachelor’s in communication in the University of Ottawa in 1992 and was elected two times as the president of the student federation from 1992 to 1994. He was vice president of the Board of Directors for Voyages Campus/Travelcuts in 1994. He was the national president of the Canadian Federation of Students for two terms from 1994 to. He also holds earned a master’s in economics from Universite du Quebec in Montreal at the end of 2001.

Guy Caron released a tax plan called Making Taxes Work for Canadians as part of his ongoing NDP leadership bid. The plan proposes the creation of a Tax Crimes Division within the Department of Justice Canada, in order to provide a more robust method of preventing tax evasion. In addition, the tax plan proposes a Financial Activities Tax to tax the profits of financial institutions and the renumeration packages of banking executives. Caron’s plan also proposes the elimination of the “CEO stock option loophole,” a promise made by the Liberal Party of Canada in the 2015 federal election.
