Following that, Valneris multiple times won medals at both the World as well as European championships and winning the silver medal in the 2008 European championship. In 2003, at the World championship, he took first position in a three-way match with Chizhov along with Alexander Georgiev but fell to Georgiev during a lengthy tie-break battle and was third overall. In 1982, Guntis Valneris made the switch to international draughts with Emmanuils Merins taking over as his coach. Under the guidance of Merins, Valneris three times in consecutive weeks took home his third consecutive World Junior Championships. In 1985, he took home the first of his senior Latvian world championships for international draughts. the following year, he took first place in the senior USSR championships but was unable to win the his gold medal in the ensuing storm.
1987 was the year that Valneris made his debut during his first European senior championships. And the following year he the first time, competed at the Senior World championships. Both times he came out with a great overall balance , but no podium. In 1990, he finished second during the World championships alongside Dutch Master Ton Sijbrands in a rematch for silver medals was scheduled to be played, but Sijbrands was disqualified the match, and Valneris immediately went on to his championship match against current world champ Alexei Chizhov next year. The game which was played in Tallinn was concluded with Chizhov’s undefeated victory.
