Caldarelli obtained the Ph.D. in the field of SISSA and, following that, Caldarelli was a postdoc at the Department of Physics and School of Biology, University of Manchester. Then, he joined the Theory of Condensed Matter Group, University of Cambridge, where he collaborated alongside Robin Ball and stayed in Wolfson College. Then he returned to Italy as a lecturer at the National Institute for Condensed Matter (INFM) and then as Primo Ricercatore at the Institute of Complex Systems of the National Research Council of Italy. Caldarelli is the author of Scale-free networks, A text for undergraduate students, published through Oxford University Press. He has also edited along with World Scientific Press another book Large Scale Structure and Dynamics of Complex Networks in the activities of the COSIN project. In 2012, he co- published with journalist and colleague Michele Catanzaro the book Networks The Very Brief Introduction from Oxford University Press. In 2016, he co- authored alongside Alessandro Chessa the book Data Science and Complex Networks from this same company. In 2018, he co-edited along with Stefano Battiston and Antonios Garas the book Multiplex and Multilevel Networks again published by Oxford University Press
