Grigol Vashadze (Georgian: grigol vashaz’e , which is also transliterated to Gregory Vashadze) (born July 19th 1958) is a Georgian politician diplomat, diplomat, and past member of the Cabinet of Georgia in the capacity of Minister of Culture, Heritage Preservation and Sport (2008) and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Georgia (2008-2012).
Vashadze was a dual citizen of Georgia as well as Russia. In the interview with Russian publication Kommersant during December of 2008 Vashadze declared that he would not deny Russian citizenship. Russian citizenship. The decision was widely criticized by the Georgian opposition. Semyon Bagdasarov who is a deputy from the Russian State Duma proposed to strip Vashadze from his Russian citizenship due to the fact that he was “anti-Russian”, but the Parliament quickly rejected the suggestion as unconstitutional. In the wake of that incident Vashadze has since renounced Russian citizenship.
In his presidential campaign, Vashadze signalled his intention to use the presidency’s limited powers to send a vocal message of integration with NATO and the European Union.
On 24 March 2019 after Mikheil Saakashvili stepped down as Chairman of the United National Movement, he was nominated by the former chairman and won the following leadership election unopposed. He currently serves as Chairman, while Mikheil Saakashvili remains “Honorary Chairman”.
From 1990 until the year 2008 Vashadze worked in the private sector, and primarily resided between Moscow in Russia and New York. Then he returned in Georgia at the end of 2005. In February 2008 the Georgian was appointed deputy to foreign minister David Bakradze whom he succeeded as Acting Minister in April of 2008. He continued to serve in the position of Deputy Minister. He was appointed Minister for the Foreign Ministry in Georgia at the end of December in 2008 replacing Ekaterine Tkeshelashvili. Then, in the month of October 2012, he took over by Maia Panjikidze.

Born to Tbilisi, Vashadze graduated from Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1981. He was employed by the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs while completing his postgraduate studies for international legal at the Soviet Diplomatic Academy. At one point Vashadze was a part of the Soviet diplomatic team in the START I talks with the United States. He worked for the Department of International Organizations and Department of Cosmos and Nuclear Weapons of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union.

In July 2018 Vashadze was nominated as a presidential candidate for 2018 Georgian presidential election by United National Movement and 9 other opposition parties. In the first round of the election, his opponent Salome Zurabishvili won just one percentage point ahead of Vashadze.
