Grete Faremo is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 16, 1955 in Arendal, Aust-Agder, Norway. Faremo is born in Arendal in the year 1955. She was raised at Byglandsfjord, Setesdal, southern Norway. Her parents are Norwegian political figure Osmund Faremo (1921-1999) and Tora Aamlid (1921). A large part of Faremo’s political philosophy was heavily in the direction of her father who was a war prisoner throughout the Second World War, after being detained as part of the Adolf Hitler’s Nacht und Nebel directive.
On November 3, 1990 Faremo was named Minister of International Development as part of Gro Harlem Brundtland’s 3rd Cabinet. She served in this position for two years prior to becoming the Minister of Justice and Public Security in September 1992. In the 1993 Norwegian elections for the Norwegian parliament, Faremo was elected to the Storting constituency, which is Oslo. Oslo constituency. Prior to that she was a part of the Oslo City Council from 1987 until 1991.
She continued as Justice Minister until the cabinet reshuffle in October 1996, where she was asked by newly appointed Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland to take over the Petroleum and Energy portfolio. However, just two months after her appointment, Faremo was forced to resign from the cabinet following the Berge Furre affair, which had revealed that the Norwegian Police Security Service were illegally spying on Socialist Left Party politician, Berge Furre, while he was a member of the Lund Commission – a group appointed to investigate allegations of illegal surveillance of Norwegian citizens.
During her time as Minister of Justice, Faremo initiated negotiations between Schengen member countries and Norway on security and free movement in Europe, which culminated in the Nordic Schengen Agreement, signed in 1996 by the Governments of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
She was a public servant in 1979 and joined at the Ministry of Finance as a Legal Officer. Then, she went on to become an Legal Officer at the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (1980-1984). In the following year she was promoted to Head of Division for the Ministry of Development and left in 1986 to assume an additional position as Chief Negotiator for the Aker Eiendom AS, a property management company. Aker Eiendom AS. A year later she was appointed Executive Director of Theatrium AS, at the newly constructed Aker Brygge in Oslo, then resigning in 1990 in order in order to be a director at Amedia, the Norwegian Arbeiderpresse (now now known as Amedia).

Grete Faremo (born 16 June 1955) is an ex- Norwegian politician as well as a lawyer and business leader. Since August 2014, she has held the post of Under- Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). In her political career, she held high-ranking posts in the Norwegian Government, including Minister of Justice between 1992 and 1996, as well as between 2011 and 2013 as the Minister of Petroleum and Energy in 1996 and the Minister for International Development from 1990-1992 and Minister of Defence from 2009 to 2011.
Faremo went to Hornnes Gymnas located in the town close to Hornnes graduating in the year 1973. She then went on to take law classes in The University of Oslo, specializing in international law. She then was a student in the summer of the year 1978 studying at The Hague Academy of International Law. In the same year, she completed her university studies with a master’s in Law.
The illegal surveillance of Furre took place at the same time that Faremo was Justice Minister. She therefore took political responsibility for the scandal. Faremo resigned from the cabinet on 18 December 1996, but continued in her role as a Member of the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament) until the following general election in 1997 when she did not seek re-election.

Faremo lost her position as Minister of Justice following the 2013 Norwegian parliamentary election in which the incumbent red-green coalition lost to the a centre-right coalition made up of the Conservatives and the Progress Party – known as the “Blue-Blue” coalition.
