Grenville Rodney Millington (born 10 December 1951 in Queensferry, Flintshire) is a former professional footballer who was at the top of The Football League as a goalkeeper. Millington had a long and successful career at Chester and was named Chester’s BBC Cult Hero in 2005. Millington is now a seasoned goalkeeping coach. Millington is the brother to Tony Millington, who played in goal for Wales.
In the 1982-83 campaign, Millington start his career as a regular goalie for Chester however, an injury to his arm in an away defeat against Mansfield Town in October 1982 began ending his times at the club. Millington was released two months later , but returned to the club under non-contract terms in March
- He was able to combine with the role of a backup to Phil Harrington with a coaching job within the squad. Millington played in his final match of the season in a loss of 2-1 at Scunthorpe United, before joining Oswestry Town, a non-league club. Oswestry Town in the summer of 1983.
Millington continued to be the goalkeeper of choice in front of Mike Craven until early in 1977-78 when the fellow Welshman Brian Lloyd was signed from Wrexham and Millington would not take part for the next two years. However, he returned to his spot in the 1979-80 season and also helped Chester to reach into the FA Cup fifth round. Millington was a constant presence during the 1980-81 season and in following the season, he was awarded his player of the year award despite Chester being demoted. The current season saw Millington engaged in a freak accident during the Football League Cup tie with Plymouth Argyle was abandoned after Millington collided with an upright – which broke in the process.

Millington was the first player to make his Chester debut at the age of 17 in April 1969, in the final game at home in the league in the match against Lincoln City, in a match that also marked an initial Chester game by Nigel Edwards (who would go on to become a long-serving friend of Millington) and the final appearance for the famous Gary Talbot. However, this would be Millington’s last appearance in Chester before being let go and returning to Rhyl the club the club he was with as youngster. When he was with the Lilywhites, he faced Tony for the first time when Rhyl faced Swansea City in January 1971 in the FA Cup. He also played with Witton Albion, and was in a trial match with Brighton & Hove Albion, before returning to Chester in November 1973. His first game returned ended with the FA Cup win over Telford United and he took over John Taylor as first-choice goalkeeper at the club.
The 1974-75 season was among Chester’s best when they reached the Football League Cup semi-finals and was promoted out of Division Four. Millington was a key player in the success of both teams as he was involved in every match, most notably his outstanding stop against Malcolm MacDonald in a quarter- finals massive killing win against Newcastle United. Millington also establish the club record for the longest stretch of time without conceding the ball.
In the late 1990s, Millington became goalkeeping coach with both Wrexham and Chester and worked off and on for the latter until leaving in February 2006. He is now goalkeeping coach at Connah’s Quay Nomads and president of the Chester City Supporters Trust.
